ABOUT DAVID

Hi, I’m David Newman.

I’m a 25-year resident of Thousand Oaks, a former mayor, and current City Councilmember. Prior to my election to the Council in 2022, I served for eight years on our city’s Planning Commission.

I’ve owned two businesses here and previously worked as an award-winning journalist. I’m a husband, a dog dad (thanks to my wife Sally, we have an ever-changing cast of fosters), an avid cyclist, and a too-infrequent hiker.

Every day I’m reminded how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful, safe, and vibrant area. That didn’t happen by accident. It requires good governance, a concern for the well-being of all residents, beneficial land use, sound environmental practices, and responsible financial stewardship.

I try to ensure these things by putting community interests first, not only on the City Council, but also on the boards of these external agencies:

I also serve on policy committees of organizations that advocate for city interests at the state and federal levels:

Last but certainly not least, I volunteer when I can at the Adelante Comunidad Conejo food bank. Even here in the most affluent community in Ventura County, too many families and children are food-insecure. Adelante’s efforts not only help families in need but also build a strong sense of community among neighbors.

We have some of the best minds in the world here in Thousand Oaks — scientists, teachers, healthcare professionals, creatives, engineers, and many, many others. We all share a common interest in keeping our city working for all our residents. I am running to represent everyone’s interest, not just special interests. Working together and with your support, let’s make that happen!

My wife Sally and in-laws are first-generation immigrants, and living proof that immigrants make our country stronger. After facing ethnic persecution in their native Indonesia, they came to the USA seeking a better life. And they found it, building careers in engineering, finance, law, and medicine. No one can tell me the American dream is dead. In our family, we live it every day.

The 2028 Olympic road race is scheduled to pass through Thousand Oaks! It’s little wonder why: We have some of the best riding in the world right in our backyard.
